This female figure sitting holding a child is a Dogon hermaphrodite from the Dogon Tribe. With its long neck and great dignity, it evokes a hierarchical status. The style is known as Bombou-Toro. Maternity figures represent ideals of beauty, fertility, commonly used as sanctuary figures. They were often the subject of petitions or prayers for fertility and successful births.
