These striated masks, or Kifwebe , originate from the Songye people, the southern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. These types of masks were used to mark important periods of transition and social transformation, appearing at the death of a chief or any other eminent person, or when a person takes on an important political title.

It is made of carved wood , with notches and pigments.
