The Lega people live near the northern end of Lake Tanganyika, on the banks of the Lualaba River in the Democratic Republic of Congo, masks are generally carved in a distinctive style, with a concave heart-shaped face with slightly bulging forehead, narrow nose, half-closed eyes and mouth slightly open.
The faces of the masks are rubbed with white clay (Pembe) each time they are used and thus acquire the white pagination of that color.
Masks are used by initiates.
