The Kwele people inhabit the areas border between Gabon, Cameroon and the Republic of Congo. Their masks are characterized by their heart shape, almond-shaped eyes, and are often bleached with white clay - kaolin - which gives them the whitish appearance that the Kwele associate with light and clarity, two key elements in the fight against evil. These masks are controlled by the Bwete society, which maintains social order and are used in ceremonies to promote the good of the community. Sometimes the eyes have no opening, as they were used more to show than to use them
