DAN PEOPLE
Dan Mask
Description
This impressive carved mask, with an adornment of feathers, shells and fabric - is a symbol of prestige for its owner. Cowry shells not only serve a decorative function, but also indicate that the spirits have blessed the young initiate with wealth.
In the past, cowry shells were used as money. Feathers signify beauty and the ability to flee if danger arose.
Masks were used for traditional initiation ceremonies.
Mask like this is the most important art form of the Dan people of Liberia.
It is made of shells, wood, fabric and plant fiber.
