This impressive sculpted mask, with an adornment of feathers, shells and fabric - it is a symbol of prestige for its owner. Cowry shells not only represent a decorative function, but also indicate that spirits have blessed the young initiate with wealth.

In the past, cowry shells were used as money. Feathers mean beauty and the ability to escape if danger arises.

The masks were used for traditional initiation ceremonies.

Mask like this is the most important art form of the Dan people of Liberia.

It is made of shells, wood , fabric and vegetable fiber.
