This ancestral pwo or mwana pwo mask, with a hairline made of a braided fiber fabric, presents beautiful and unusual scarification patterns on the forehead and face, originating from Angola. Pwo means femininity and an elderly ancestral female associated with fertility. The crossed shape on the forehead, known as “cingelyengelye”, is an early Portuguese influence.
It is made of carved wood and vegetable fiber.
