Wooden Dogon lock with worn incised markings. Beautiful and old, showing many signs of good use throughout her life. This lock in particular was heavily carved, giving an overall pattern well known to the Dogons.

The Dogon culture maintained themselves in many of their ancestral traditions. One of these traditions is to build granaries and houses for storing grain. Doors to these barns are often decorated with sculptures of animals or people who celebrate deities or spirits, or as status symbols. The stored grain is considered safe because it is kept by the images that are depicted on the doors. The locks were attached to the doors with large iron clips. Now we can enjoy the oldest locks that have been saved, but not in use, as art!

It is made of carved wood and plastic.
