Commissioned by powerful chiefs as portraits three-dimensional figures of favorite wives, figures like these expressed status and prestige, both for the subjects, as well as for the ancestral family and for the owners. They would bring honor to the ancestors and the owner of the sculptures. Once the engraving of the figure is complete, Lü Me is introduced to the community during a large banquet offered by the chief (as such, only wealthy men could order a Lü Me for their wives). After the inauguration, the figure was usually kept hidden in the house and then revealed only on important occasions.
It is made of carved and carved wood, with a shiny patina.
