This male figure holding a small ladder is originally from the Dogon People. The statue evokes a hierarchical status transferred by the chief of the tribe to a family that had contributed to the community. Dogons use large stairs to climb and access their homes and barns. The small stairs are used in the same way as the figures of the ancestors: stairs like this were placed on the family altar side by side with other figures. Most importantly, they are placed against the ritual pot where the head of the family's spirit resides. The Dogons believe that this ladder is of great importance because their heads of household would have to climb this ladder in order to reach the ancestral world.
