This ancestral Dogon couple represents Nommo and Amma, the ancestors of all humans. The arm around the shoulder symbolizes the relationship between Nommo and Amma before his sacrifice, but also his role as the organizer of the world. Sometimes he is a hermaphrodite because Nommo is bisexual. These types of Dogon sculptures are preserved in the darkness of sanctuaries or family houses. The sculptural composition conveys an eloquent message about human duality and the bond between man and woman, two different but complementary beings. The elongated bodies of the figures are represented by a series of parallel vertical lines, crossed by horizontal lines that act as bonds of union.
It is made of bronze.
