---------------------------------------------

The Makonde mask originates from Makonde tribe of Mozambique. It has an opening for the mouth and a distinct recess in the eye areas, as well as pigmented lips, which gives the mask an almost vivid appearance. This mask was used by men in performances of a series of celebrations called mapiko. The Mapiko dance is linked to male initiation rites and is the most important dance of the Makondes.

It is made of carved wood, with small carvings and pigments.
