This sculpture, originally from the Tribe Dogon is a hunter holding a ladder on his back. For the Dogon people who use large stairs to climb and access their houses and barns, when these small stairs are portrayed in ancestral figures and placed on a family altar next to other figures it is of paramount importance, because their heads of the family they would have to climb that ladder to reach the ancestral world. The most important thing is that they are placed against the pot ritual where the spirit of the head of the family resides.
The sculpture represents the art, power and authority of Dogon art. The wooden sculptures have a special meaning for the Dogon, as they combine symbol and a powerful aesthetic in a very abstract image.
